Top three artists of each decade (1960-2020)

Top three artists of each decade (1960-2020)

Here at True Vision we love music of all genres (especially drum and bass) so we’re going to run down the top artists of each decade from the 1960s to 2020s for you to have a look at.

1960s

The year of rock and roll; whether it was pop rock, psychedelic rock, blues rock or folk rock. It was the time where rock massively thrived and grew in popularity.

Our first artist of the decade is The Beatles. The band from Liverpool had no idea what they were truly in for, creating hits such as: ‘Help!’, ‘You’ve got to hide your love away’, ‘Drive my car’, ‘Got to get you into my life’, ‘Yellow submarine’ and of course, ‘Eleanor Rigby’.

The Beatles gave a wow factor that no one had really seen or heard before, making them rise to fame quickly, transforming the music game forever.

Coming in at second place is the king of rock and roll…Elvis Presley. With songs like: ‘Can’t help falling in love’, ‘It’s now or never’ and ‘Are you lonesome tonight’. People fell in love with him and his voice so much that Elvis ended up making even more hits that many people still listen to today.

And finally, the third artist of this decade is The Rolling Stones. Their top three songs of this decade were: ‘Gimme Shelter’, ‘Sympathy for the Devil’ and ‘(I can’t get no) satisfaction’. We all know that The Stones were one of the bands that had the greatest impact on the music industry and their music allows anyone to immerse themselves into the period of time that was the 60s.

1970s

Pink Floyd took over as number one this year with tracks such as: ‘Comfortably Numb’, ‘Wish you were here’ and ‘Money’. They used blues and psychedelic rock which both became a huge part of the genre because of the band which brought in fans and because they loved it so much, the band just kept growing leading Pink Floyd to be named the biggest band of all time.

Second on our list is the Eagles, an American rock band from Los Angeles. With the original members; Randy Meisner, Bernie Leadon, Don Henley and Glenn Frey. The Eagles or the stars of the seventies as most people would call them, grew massively after their career changing album ‘Hotel California’ which also won a Grammy in 1977 for record of the year.

And the last band that completes the seventies top three is an English rock band Led Zeppelin. With hits such as ‘Stairway to Heaven’, ‘whole lotta love’ and ‘Kashmir’ the band really thrived as their music style was diverse and soon became well known, developing the influence of heavy metal music.

1980s

The legendary king of pop coming in as the number one artist of the 80’s, Michael Jackson. During his most creative peak he released songs such as ‘Beat it’, ‘Billie Jean’, ‘Wanna be startin’ somethin’ and ‘Thriller’. Leaving behind his Jackson 5 days, Michael started a solo career which obviously worked out for him becoming a world wide superstar.

Madonna is next on our list with hits including ‘Like a virgin’, ‘Crazy for you’, ‘Live to teach’ and ‘Papa don’t preach’. Known by some as the queen of pop, Madonna is considered to be one of the most influential artists in pop culture as she has and is always reinventing.

We’re ending the eighties top three on a high with Phil Collins. Releasing songs like ‘I missed again’, ‘In the air tonight’ and ‘you can’t hurry love’ showing off his impressive song writing skills, passion for performance and commitment to the business.

1990s

Known for her skilled and powerful vocals, the top listened to artist of the 90s is Canadian singer Celine Dion. Covering genres such as soft rock and pop, a few of her songs such as ‘The power of love’, ‘My heart will go on’ and ‘My heart will go on’ topped the charts.

Mariah Carey, known for her five octave vocal range and signature use of the whistle register was the second most listened to artist of the 90s. With all of her first five singles going to no.1 on the Billboard hot 100 she became the new pop star of the decade, with songs such as ‘All i want for christmas’, ‘Always be my baby’ and ‘Fantasy’.

American country musician Garth Brooks managed to place 3rd most listened to in the 90s, by merging rock and pop into country he managed to gain people's attention and following. Songs such as ‘Friends in low places’, ‘The dance’ and ‘Ain’t goin’ down (‘til the sun comes up’ quickly became the fan favourites.

2000s

Marshall Bruce Mathers III also known as Eminem became one of the most best selling artists of all time with tracks ‘Stan’, ‘The real slim shady’ and ‘Dr Dre’. He really took off in 2000 and pretty much hasn’t stopped since. With 50 million subscribers on youtube, over 200 million records sold - he is the 6th best-selling solo music artist of all time.

Second on the list is Linkin Park, an American rock band who started out in 1996 but became massively popular in the 2000s with songs ‘One step closer’, ‘Crawling’ and ‘In the end’. Generations of fans loved the sound of Bennington’s rock vocals and Shinoda’s rap style.

The British band Coldplay has overall changed through the years from alternative rock to pop rock, which has brought in fans who love different genres. With hits ‘Yellow’ and ‘Viva la vida’ they just kept climbing up.

2010s

Adele, She really held the 2010s together let's be honest. With hits coming at us left, right and center she was unstoppable. The british singer/songwriter is one of the world's best selling music artists - winning three grammys for record of the year, song of the year and best short form music video for songs ‘Rolling in the deep’, ‘Someone like you’ and ‘Set fire to the rain’.

Canadian singer Justin Bieber was the second most listened to throughout this decade and had many hits such as ‘One time’, ‘Boyfriend’ and of course ‘Baby’. He didn’t stop there though, he’s had at least one charting song each year throughout the decade and is still going strong.

Taylor Swift started out making country music and since then has widened her range and now has 165 US Billboard Hot 100 chart entries which includes thirty top ten songs and eight number one songs. She became extremely well known with the releases of her songs ‘We are never ever getting back together’, ‘I knew you were trouble’ and ‘Shake it off’.

2020s

And now we’re into the 2020s so the list is ongoing and could change but as of right now the number one place is taken by a South Korean boy band known as BTS - who started out in 2013 but only in recent years blew up with songs ‘Butter’, ‘Permission to dance’ and ‘Dynamite’.

Taylor Swift takes second place. The only artist in this list who managed to make it in the top three for two decades. From releasing albums Folklore and Evermore during 2020 we’re now getting her re-recorded albums/songs from the vault so we highly doubt she’ll be leaving this spot anytime soon and especially with her release of ‘All too well’ the 10 minute version, it just keeps growing everyday.

The Weeknd made the top three list with songs ‘Save your tears’, ‘Blinding lights’ and ‘Heartless’. Known for his versatility and dark lyricism his music is often inspired by personal experiences. He keeps winning awards such as the top artist award at the Billboard Music Awards, so we can see that he is clearly loved by listeners and his fans.

And that brings us to the end of our top three artists list. But, before you go we highly recommend that you check out some of our personal top music artists and as you know, we’re massive Drum & Bass fans so if you’re into that, these are the artists to look out for!

Firstly, Pendulum. They’re an Australian band who make drum and bass, electronic dance music, dubstep, rock, house, heavy metal music…the list goes on! Winning best performing independent album and independent artist of the year awards!

Secondly, Sub Focus. He is an english DJ, songwriter, record producer, sound engineer and musician. Since 2003 he has focused on creating drum and bass, house, dubstep, electro and clownstep music and has made some pretty great tunes.

Lastly, Andy C. He is a well known British DJ/record producer and co-founder of RAM records. He has won DJ awards for Best Bass and has his own signature style setting him apart from all the other competition.
