The History of Boardmasters Featival
We are counting down the days for festival season here at True Vision! While we wait we thought we’d give you a brief history of one of our favourites - Boardmasters!
HISTORY:
Boardmasters festival is an annual event held in Newquay, Cornwall held over five days in August, with a capacity of over 50,000. The festival celebrates all our favourite things - from surf and skate to a variety of live music, previous headliners include: Two Door Cinema Club, Stormzy, Chase & Status and Ed Sheran.
Originating in 1981, Boardmasters began as a surfing competition at Fistral Beach - one of the world's top surfing spots, home to many international competitions. Over the 40 years Boardmaster has held some of the biggest names in surfing including Kelly Slater, Rabbit Bartholemewl, Billy Stairmand and Hodei Collazo. Although the festival has now diversified to music, skate & more you can still watch the masters at work at the Boardmasters Open at Fistral Beach while listening to DJs and live bands playing throughout the day and browsing the variety of small businesses and sellers.
In 2005 the music side of Boardmasters Festival was created, opening the event to thousands of new fans. The music festival is held on the cliffs of Watergate Bay (walking distance from Fistral Beach) and now has eleven stages so you can find your crowd, including:
-Main Stage: For the huge stars and headliners including The Kaiser Chiefs, Snoop Dogg and George Ezra.
-Unleashed: Perfect for the lovers of house, dance, garage, electro or grime - this is the biggest rave in the South West! Previous performers include Craig David, Sigma and Zane Lowe.
-Land of Saints Stage: Holds a huge variety of performers, perfect for those who love independent artists. Amazing performances have been given here by Royal Blood, Wolf Alice and Slaves.
- DJ’s & After Parties: No festival is complete without a full complement of after parties, featuring many of the UK’s (and the worlds) fines DJ’s and performing artists such as: Shy FX, Andy C + Tonn Piper, Stamina MC, Eats Everything, Basement Jaxx, DJ Target, Netsky, Sherelle, and many more!
Unfortunately in 2019 the boardmasters event was forced to be cancelled just hours before the gates were opened due to a weather warning of a storm from the MET Office, disappointing thousands. Due to the Covid-19 restrictions the following year, like many other festivals, the event was once again unable to go ahead. However, this has only made us more excited to see the festival reopen and continue to grow and thrive in the future!

Festivals are a key part of us as a brand, and we have previously held stalls alongside many small businesses at Boardmasters, along the sands of Fistral Beach.
